SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Methods in Critique w/ Christopher Najera & Fernando Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:TO BE RESCHEDULED FOR THE FALL! – Open to the public \n  \nJoin us for a lecture co-presented by artists Christopher Najera and Fernando Alvarez. As artists\, we spend a lot of time discussing our opinions and the formal properties of artwork\, but what makes a critique both beneficial and stimulating as a conversation? These two artists will discuss their approach to critique\, tools and formats\, and engage in a live critique of artwork as a demonstration. \n  \nChristopher Najera is an artist based in Fort Worth\, Texas and a current MFA candidate at TCU. Christopher is part of and works with the local mutual aid and immigration justice groups here in DFW. His work deals with the intersectionality of identities\, his Chicanx roots\, queer identity\, and the current cultural zeitgeist. \n  \nOriginally from Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Fernando Alvarez moved to North Texas in 2006. His concept-driven work uses his displacement from Honduras to explore broader themes like paranoia\, culture\, and class\, often with a humorous or flippant tone at his own expense. Through an interdisciplinary practice\, Fernando examines the eccentricities of his background to better understand himself and the subcultures he navigates. Fernando is also a co-founder of Easyside\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Easyside is an art space in East Fort Worth that provides career resources for artists and addresses food access and equity in the area. Currently\, Fernando is an Assistant Curator of Education at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

SUMMARY:Monotype w/ Anthony TungNing Huang
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $30 tickets for public \n  \nJoin us for an afternoon of monotype printing with Anthony TungNing Huang. Using painterly techniques\, this process suspends ink on a sheet of plexiglass\, which may then be transferred to a piece of paper to create multi-layed\, one-of-a-kind prints. This one day course will cover the basics of traditional monotype\, mark making techniques\, color and image layering\, and additive/reductive techiniques in image making. \n  \nAnthony Huang is a Taiwanese American artist. Born in Taipei and raised in Shanghai\, China\, he received his BA in journalism from the East China University of Political Science and Law in 2014. After working as a professional ballroom dancer and theater producer in Shanghai\, he moved to the United States. He first lived in Los Angeles\, California\, and then earned his first MFA in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. In 2024\, he received his second MFA in Studio Art\, focusing on Printmaking\, at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. In July 2024\, he moved to Dallas\, TX\, to begin his teaching career as a full-time professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Dallas College. \n  \nHuang began printmaking in 2020 and became enamored with the charm of the traditional print processes. The Daoist philosophy influenced his artistic practice – Wu Wei. He’s trying to use the idea of Wu Wei to rethink the relationship between urban space and the natural world and how it can create a spiritual sublimation for urban citizens.

SUMMARY:Critical Feedback Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nThis program provides deep\, critical feedback on participating artists’ work. Five artists may participate in 15-minute conversations\, welcoming feedback from an audience of members of the DFW community. Both CU members and non-members may present work. \nWhile potentially blunt\, Critical Feedback Sessions serve to provide unfiltered and honest feedback regarding conceptual\, contemporary\, or formal aspects of artworks being discussed. Conversations will center more on viewer reactions and feedback rather than artist’s explanation. Presenting artists may present up to 3 works either in progress or completed. \nPizza and refreshments will be provided. \n  \nSIGN-UP TO PRESENT

SUMMARY:Narrative Structures w/ Chukwudi Ukonne @ Wild Detectives
DESCRIPTION:Open to the Public \n  \nMeet up with The Cedars Union at Wild Detectives for a long form presentation\, workshop\, and Q&A session with Chukwudi Ukonne. Rather than treating the artist statement as a purely informational document\, the session reframes it as a narrative act—one that draws from memory\, process\, experience\, and curiosity. Through guided writing prompts\, collective reflection\, and peer feedback\, participants will learn how to translate memory\, processes\, experiences into compelling stories. \n  \nChukwudi Ukonne is an essayist\, researcher\, editor\, and storyteller with bylines in Isele Magazine\, The Republic Journal\, Stears Business\, The Kalahari Review\, Culture Custodian\, and African Arguments. His work centers on African and Afro-diasporian history\, politics\, and culture\, offering nuanced perspectives on these rich and complex subjects. \n  \nHis work has garnered both local and international recognition. Chukwudi’s essay “Flight” was shortlisted in Isele Magazine’s “Top Reads of 2023” Nonfiction category. His coverage of the #EndSARS protests received a special mention at the 2021 One World media awards. This particular award category aims to “recognise and encourage outstanding reporting” that informs the public\, offers a platform for local voices and holds those in positions of authority accountable.

SUMMARY:Tools for Pricing Artwork w/ Louky Keijsers Koning
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nJoin art appraiser Louky Keijsers Koning as she talks through the different approaches to pricing artwork and the nuance that comes with doing so. Pulling from her experience in the gallery world\, Louky will discuss potential algorithms for pricing while also discussing the intricacies and faults of these pricing models. Following this will be a brief Q&A where you can ask your burning questions! \n  \nLouky Keijsers Koning\, is an art historian\, fine art appraiser\, curator\, and Director of the Estate of Barbara Hammer. Living and working between Dallas and New York City\, her practice moves fluidly between scholarship\, the art market\, and artist legacy work. She began her career in Amsterdam at Paul Andriesse Gallery\, a formative environment for artists such as Rineke Dijkstra\, Marlene Dumas\, and Thomas Struth\, before relocating to New York to work at Thomas Erben Gallery with artists including Senga Nengudi\, Adrian Piper\, and Jackie Saccoccio. In 2005\, she co-founded LMAKprojects (later LMAKgallery)\, which became known for its rigorous focus on conceptual and time-based media\, presenting early solo exhibitions by artists such as Harold Ancart and Federico Solmi. \n  \nSince 2021\, she has served as the inaugural Director of the Estate of Barbara Hammer\, overseeing archival stewardship\, institutional partnerships\, and the continued visibility of Hammer’s pioneering contributions to feminist and queer cinema. Alongside her estate work\, Keijsers Koning is a certified member of the Appraisers Association of America and the principal of her own appraisal firm\, established in 2015\, specializing in Post-War\, Contemporary\, and Emerging Art\, with particular expertise in film\, video\, and other time-based media. She holds MA degrees in Art History and Art Management from the University of Amsterdam\, completed the Appraisal Studies program at NYU\, and remains USPAP-compliant.
