SUMMARY:Hand-Sawn Metal Forms w/ Felicia Jordan
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $65 tickets for public \n  \nStep into the world of metalsmithing for a day of hands-on creativity! In this beginner-friendly workshop\, you’ll learn one of the fundamental skills of metalsmithing: sawing. All skill levels are welcome\, and no prior experience is necessary. You’ll explore the basics of working with a jeweler’s saw while designing and creating your own custom copper bookmark inspired by the spooky spirit of Halloween. You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind handmade bookmark and a taste of what it’s like to be a metalsmith for a day! \n  \nFelicia Jordan‘s work explores the personal and intrapersonal relationships we have with our physical\, mental\, and emotional bodies. Using techniques ranging from traditional carpentry to three dimensional fabrications\, the works are created to show a visual representation of individual trauma’s experiences as well as the universality of loss. Her works are meant to elicit an empathic response from the audience. There are common traumas and pains that bring humans together as a form of bonding.

SUMMARY:Coil Built Ceramics w/ Cat Rigdon
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $65 tickets for public \n  \nCome get your hands dirty at the CU! Join Cohort 2 alum\, Cat Rigdon as she guides you through the process of coil-built ceramics inspired by ancient Cypriot artifacts. This workshop will cover the basics of creating a coil-built ceramic vessel with handles. Once your vessel is built\, you’ll dive into decorating using sgraffito underglaze techniques\, allowing you to personalize your creation. \n  \nCU staff will bisque fire your creation which will be ready for pick-up 2 weeks after the workshop. These pieces will not be food safe and are intended to be sculptural. \n  \nCat Rigdon is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Dallas\, Texas. She grew up on the island of Cyprus during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rigdon and her siblings would sneak into ancient archeological sites such as Tomb of the Kings in Paphos and rummage through abandoned monasteries and hotels\, sometimes under their parent’s supervision. These strong memories along with the island’s strong folk art\, naturalism\, and archeological relevance are reflected in Rigdon’s work through her depictions of ancient funerary goods. \n  \nRigdon graduated from Texas State University in 2014 with a Bachelor degree in Studio Art-Painting. After graduation\, she moved to Dallas as a Decorative Arts Junior Specialist and Cataloger for Heritage Auctions. During her tenure with the auction house\, Rigdon honed in her understanding of object and material culture. The position allowed Rigdon to handle thousands of objects\, pieces of furniture\, and a few ancient artifacts.

SUMMARY:Methods in Critique w/ Christopher Najera & Fernando Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nJoin us for a lecture co-presented by artists Christopher Najera and Fernando Alvarez. As artists\, we spend a lot of time discussing our opinions and the formal properties of artwork\, but what makes a critique both beneficial and stimulating as a conversation? These two artists will discuss their approach to critique\, tools and formats\, and engage in a live critique of artwork as a demonstration. \n  \nChristopher Najera is an artist based in Fort Worth\, Texas and a current MFA candidate at TCU. Christopher is part of and works with the local mutual aid and immigration justice groups here in DFW. His work deals with the intersectionality of identities\, his Chicanx roots\, queer identity\, and the current cultural zeitgeist. \nOriginally from Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Fernando Alvarez moved to North Texas in 2006. His concept-driven work uses his displacement from Honduras to explore broader themes like paranoia\, culture\, and class\, often with a humorous or flippant tone at his own expense. Through an interdisciplinary practice\, Fernando examines the eccentricities of his background to better understand himself and the subcultures he navigates. Fernando is also a co-founder of Easyside\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Easyside is an art space in East Fort Worth that provides career resources for artists and addresses food access and equity in the area. Currently\, Fernando is an Assistant Curator of Education at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

SUMMARY:Experimental Wood Dyeing w/ Narong Tintamusik
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $40 tickets for public \n  \nThis one-day workshop introduces aniline dyeing as an experimental approach to coloring wood beyond traditional stain or paint. Participants will explore how translucent dyes can transform wood surfaces into layered\, textile-like skins through techniques such as washing\, layering\, bleeding\, bleaching\, and resist. The workshop is open to artists working across painting\, craft\, sculpture\, and design who are interested in expanding their surface vocabulary. Students will leave with a set of test panels and a deeper understanding of how dyes can be used as structural and conceptual materials. This workshop is open to all levels. \n  \nNarong Tintamusik (ณรงค์ ตินตมุสิก) is a Thai-American artist and material researcher based in Dallas\, Texas. His interdisciplinary practice explores personal and collective survival through painting\, sculpture\, wearables\, and installation\, all shaped by a craft-centered approach. Drawing from Thai heritage\, queer identity\, Buddhist-animist cosmology\, and a former career in biological sciences\, his work engages with themes of infrastructural collapse\, cultural assimilation\, spiritual disconnection\, and systemic barriers to care. He asks: how can we look beyond material systems of value toward deeper forms of connection\, attention\, and nourishment?

SUMMARY:Critical Feedback Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nThis program provides deep\, critical feedback on participating artists’ work. Five artists may participate in 15-minute conversations\, welcoming feedback from an audience of members of the DFW community. Both CU members and non-members may present work. \nWhile potentially blunt\, Critical Feedback Sessions serve to provide unfiltered and honest feedback regarding conceptual\, contemporary\, or formal aspects of artworks being discussed. Conversations will center more on viewer reactions and feedback rather than artist’s explanation. Presenting artists may present up to 3 works either in progress or completed. \nPizza and refreshments will be provided. \n  \nSIGN-UP TO PRESENT \n

SUMMARY:Art\, Research\, and Narrative w/ Atinuke Osibogun-Adeleke
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nJoin us for an artist lecture led by artist and jeweler\, Atinuke Adeleke. Centered on the convergence of studio practices and conceptual exploration\, Atinuke will share her concepts\, her making process\, and her art’s connection to personal narrative. Half artist bio and half informative methods in research\, this lecture centers on her lived experience as a Nigerian who has traversed three continents and how it feeds into the crafting of her work. \n  \nAtinuke Osibogun-Adeleke is an interdisciplinary artist and a graduate of the University of North Texas. As the owner and lead designer of the home and body adornment brand\, Zuri Perle\, she channels her artistic vision into captivating creations that blend tradition with innovation. \nHer artistic practice revolves around themes of personal history\, connection\, and identity\, reflecting her journey as a Nigerian who has traversed three continents. Atinuke’s work explores the deconstruction\, reassembly\, and hybridization of her identity through sculpture and fiber pieces. These creations seamlessly integrate the traditional culture and practices of her homeland\, Nigeria\, with western woodworking techniques and modern processes such as CAD\, 3D printing\, and CNC routing.

SUMMARY:Cohort VI App Info Session (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nATTENTION ARTISTS The applications for the CU Cohort 6 are about to close! Join us\, for an in-person\, in-depth info session. \nDo you have questions about the Cohort Artist program? Maybe you’re having trouble with CaFÉ? Join Manager of Programming\, Taylor Gibson\, virtually for an in-depth info session where he will discuss The Cedars Union\, Cohort program\, and walk through the application process. \nMicro-studios at The Cedars Union provide affordable studio space with accessibility to tools\, programs\, and workshops. Though “micro\,” The Cedars Union facilities provide additional shared workspace for all members to use. \nHaving a personal studio at The Cedars Union is an experience designated for our incubator\, or Cohort program. Becoming a Cohort artist at The Cedars Union places you in a year-and-a-half program with 14 other peers\, chosen by an outside jury to ensure commitment to artistic practice and diversity in experience\, media\, and background. Applicants request a studio size and upon acceptance enter an 18 month lease commitment. After completing the 18 month “incubation”\, artists move out and a new cohort is selected. Many Cohort artists stay on as Community Members.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Methods in Critique w/ Christopher Najera & Fernando Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:TO BE RESCHEDULED FOR THE FALL! – Open to the public \n  \nJoin us for a lecture co-presented by artists Christopher Najera and Fernando Alvarez. \n  \nOriginally from Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Fernando Alvarez moved to North Texas in 2006.

SUMMARY:Monotype w/ Anthony TungNing Huang
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $30 tickets for public \n  \nJoin us for an afternoon of monotype printing with Anthony TungNing Huang. Using painterly techniques\, this process suspends ink on a sheet of plexiglass\, which may then be transferred to a piece of paper to create multi-layed\, one-of-a-kind prints. This one day course will cover the basics of traditional monotype\, mark making techniques\, color and image layering\, and additive/reductive techiniques in image making. \n  \nAnthony Huang is a Taiwanese American artist. Born in Taipei and raised in Shanghai\, China\, he received his BA in journalism from the East China University of Political Science and Law in 2014. After working as a professional ballroom dancer and theater producer in Shanghai\, he moved to the United States. He first lived in Los Angeles\, California\, and then earned his first MFA in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. In 2024\, he received his second MFA in Studio Art\, focusing on Printmaking\, at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. In July 2024\, he moved to Dallas\, TX\, to begin his teaching career as a full-time professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Dallas College. \n  \nHuang began printmaking in 2020 and became enamored with the charm of the traditional print processes. The Daoist philosophy influenced his artistic practice – Wu Wei. He’s trying to use the idea of Wu Wei to rethink the relationship between urban space and the natural world and how it can create a spiritual sublimation for urban citizens.

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion | The Rise of Unconventional Art Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Across Dallas/Fort Worth\, a new wave of artists\, curators\, and organizers are redefining where art can live – and who it’s for. From living rooms and warehouses to storefronts\, studios and nomadic pop-ups\, unconventional spaces are carving out room for experimentation\, risk\, and urgent conversation. \n  \nModerated by Jillian Wendel\, founder of Shed Show in Denton\, TX\, this panel brings together leaders working outside traditional institutional models to discuss why alternative spaces matter now more than ever. What freedoms do these spaces afford? What challenges do they face? And how do they reshape the cultural landscape of North Texas? Panelists include: \n  \nFernando Alvarez (Easyside) \nBrent Burnbaum (CHEERLEADER) \nTessa Granowski (Nature of Things) \nRyan Semegran (2 BED 1 BATH) \n  \nJoin us for an honest conversation about building platforms from the ground up\, and what becomes possible when artists create their own rooms. \n— \nThis program is made possible in part through the generous support of the Eugene McDermott Foundation.
