SUMMARY:CANCELLED - Methods in Critique w/ Christopher Najera & Fernando Alvarez
DESCRIPTION:TO BE RESCHEDULED FOR THE FALL! – Open to the public \n  \nJoin us for a lecture co-presented by artists Christopher Najera and Fernando Alvarez. As artists\, we spend a lot of time discussing our opinions and the formal properties of artwork\, but what makes a critique both beneficial and stimulating as a conversation? These two artists will discuss their approach to critique\, tools and formats\, and engage in a live critique of artwork as a demonstration. \n  \nChristopher Najera is an artist based in Fort Worth\, Texas and a current MFA candidate at TCU. Christopher is part of and works with the local mutual aid and immigration justice groups here in DFW. His work deals with the intersectionality of identities\, his Chicanx roots\, queer identity\, and the current cultural zeitgeist. \n  \nOriginally from Tegucigalpa\, Honduras\, Fernando Alvarez moved to North Texas in 2006. His concept-driven work uses his displacement from Honduras to explore broader themes like paranoia\, culture\, and class\, often with a humorous or flippant tone at his own expense. Through an interdisciplinary practice\, Fernando examines the eccentricities of his background to better understand himself and the subcultures he navigates. Fernando is also a co-founder of Easyside\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Easyside is an art space in East Fort Worth that provides career resources for artists and addresses food access and equity in the area. Currently\, Fernando is an Assistant Curator of Education at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.

SUMMARY:Monotype w/ Anthony TungNing Huang
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $30 tickets for public \n  \nJoin us for an afternoon of monotype printing with Anthony TungNing Huang. Using painterly techniques\, this process suspends ink on a sheet of plexiglass\, which may then be transferred to a piece of paper to create multi-layed\, one-of-a-kind prints. This one day course will cover the basics of traditional monotype\, mark making techniques\, color and image layering\, and additive/reductive techiniques in image making. \n  \nAnthony Huang is a Taiwanese American artist. Born in Taipei and raised in Shanghai\, China\, he received his BA in journalism from the East China University of Political Science and Law in 2014. After working as a professional ballroom dancer and theater producer in Shanghai\, he moved to the United States. He first lived in Los Angeles\, California\, and then earned his first MFA in Illustration at the Savannah College of Art and Design. In 2024\, he received his second MFA in Studio Art\, focusing on Printmaking\, at the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. In July 2024\, he moved to Dallas\, TX\, to begin his teaching career as a full-time professor of Printmaking and Drawing at Dallas College. \n  \nHuang began printmaking in 2020 and became enamored with the charm of the traditional print processes. The Daoist philosophy influenced his artistic practice – Wu Wei. He’s trying to use the idea of Wu Wei to rethink the relationship between urban space and the natural world and how it can create a spiritual sublimation for urban citizens.

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion | The Rise of Unconventional Art Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Across Dallas/Fort Worth\, a new wave of artists\, curators\, and organizers are redefining where art can live – and who it’s for. From living rooms and warehouses to storefronts\, studios and nomadic pop-ups\, unconventional spaces are carving out room for experimentation\, risk\, and urgent conversation. \n  \nModerated by Jillian Wendel\, founder of Shed Show in Denton\, TX\, this panel brings together leaders working outside traditional institutional models to discuss why alternative spaces matter now more than ever. What freedoms do these spaces afford? What challenges do they face? And how do they reshape the cultural landscape of North Texas? Panelists include: \n  \nFernando Alvarez (Easyside) \nBrent Burnbaum (CHEERLEADER) \nTessa Granowski (Nature of Things) \nRyan Semegran (2 BED 1 BATH) \n  \nJoin us for an honest conversation about building platforms from the ground up\, and what becomes possible when artists create their own rooms. \n— \nThis program is made possible in part through the generous support of the Eugene McDermott Foundation.

SUMMARY:Tools for Pricing Artwork w/ Louky Keijsers Koning
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \n  \nJoin art appraiser Louky Keijsers Koning as she talks through the different approaches to pricing artwork and the nuance that comes with doing so. Pulling from her experience in the gallery world\, Louky will discuss potential algorithms for pricing while also discussing the intricacies and faults of these pricing models. Following this will be a brief Q&A where you can ask your burning questions! \n  \nLouky Keijsers Koning\, is an art historian\, fine art appraiser\, curator\, and Director of the Estate of Barbara Hammer. My parents heavily encouraged us to embrace and respect all cultures from those we encounter. It became important for me to share stories of those who are often overlooked. Common themes in my work include the vibrant history present truth of Black people\, varying culture across ethnicities\, exploration of identity\, and topics surrounding sexuality. \n  \nMy hope is that through my work\, viewers resonate with those they see in the images and others can develop an appreciation that perhaps was not previously there.”

SUMMARY:Mural Basics w/ Ray Albarez\, Alec and Shana Dejesus
DESCRIPTION:Open to the Public \n  \nJoin us for a two-part lecture on the basics of mural making. Whether it’s questions on logistics\, planning\, business aspects\, materials\, or how to find opportunities\, this lecture will provide you with answers to demystify the medium. Alec\, Shana\, and Ray will talk about their background\, how they got into mural work\, and then share tips and know-how on what to do before you explore this massive public-facing art form. \n  \nAlec Dejesus uses brush and spray paint intuitively to create expressive and surreal artworks with a focus on energetic marks and emotion. All works are created freehand\, allowing the mind and body to directly translate onto the surfaces. He currently works as an independent artist in Dallas\, TX\, and his art focuses on escapism\, focusing on enveloping a very real message of “strength and pride through perseverance” in his vibrant paintings and murals. Working together closely with his wife\, Shana Dejesus\, the two manage a successful art practice and business. \n  \nRay Albarez is a self-taught creator and Dallas native. Ray owns a spray paint delivery company\, co-founded the renowned Trigger Fingers event\, and is employed as a toy design engineer. His work is pervasive in the metroplex and abroad in London\, Paris\, and Spain. Whether he’s painting in the forgotten realms of the city or building the artistic community\, Ray Albarez continues to challenge the viewer and himself with the duality of painting intricate pieces in abandoned locations.
