SUMMARY:Workshop: Coil-Built Ceramics w/ Cat Rigdon
DESCRIPTION:Free for CU Members | $65 for non-members\, open to the public \nRegistration for Non-Members: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/1014939269677?aff=oddtdtcreator \n  \nCome get your hands dirty at the CU! Join Cohort 2 artist and CU Manager of Development and Marketing\, Cat Rigdon as she guides you through the process of coil-built ceramics inspired by ancient Cypriot artifacts. This workshop will cover the basics of creating a coil-built ceramic vessel with handles. Once your vessel is built\, you’ll dive into decorating using sgraffito underglaze techniques\, allowing you to personalize your creation. \nCat will bisque fire your creation and will be ready to be picked up 2 weeks after the workshop. These pieces will not be food safe and are intended to be sculpture. \nCat Rigdon is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Dallas\, Texas. She grew up on the island of Cyprus during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Rigdon and her siblings would sneak into ancient archeological sites such as Tomb of the Kings in Paphos and rummage through abandoned monasteries and hotels\, sometimes under their parent’s supervision. These strong memories along with the island’s strong folk art\, naturalism\, and archeological relevance is reflected in Rigdon’s work through her depictions of ancient funerary goods. \nRigdon currently works at The Cedars Union as the Manager of Development\, focusing on connecting the community with emerging artists in North Texas.  She is a member of the female co-op TRADE Oak Cliff where she maintains her studio practice and occasionally runs community sewing projects. Rigdon is represented by Goetze Art & Design in Memphis\, Tennessee. Rigdon has received the DeGolyer Award from the Dallas Museum of Art\, the Award of Excellence from the Laughlin-Beers Foundation\, and was the Fair Director’s Pick for the 2021 edition of The Other Art Fair – Dallas.  She has shown work with Galleri Urbane\, Cluley Projects\, and Ro2 Art in Dallas\, MASS Gallery in Austin\, and has participated in New York Jewelry Week at Jewelry Arts Inc. \nThis program requires a Cedars Union Membership. SUMMARY:Lecture: Artist at Work w/ Antonio Lechuga
DESCRIPTION:Open to the public \nJoin us for the next iteration of our lecture series\, Artist at Work. Centered on the convergence of studio practices and conceptual exploration\, this series provides a platform for artists to delve into their work and its connection to their personal narratives. This month we’re joined by Antonio Lechuga\, whose practice focuses on the intersection of art\, design\, architecture and social change. He uses a varied visual language of materials and processes to discuss and investigate his culture and existence; both his existence and experiences as a Tejano living in the 21st century and it’s constant battle with the erasure of that history. \nAntonio uses the current condition of today’s political climate to inform and guide his work. Through investigations\, research and new technologies Antonio begins to piece together new narratives of a future for the Mexican-American of the Texas region while emphasizing and highlighting it’s rich\, deep and turbulent past. \nHe has exhibited work both nationally and internationally but most previously at many regional Dallas-Fort Worth institutions including 500X Gallery\, the Geometric MADI Museum\, Arts Fort Worth\, Craighead Green Gallery\, Ro2 Art Gallery\, ArtRoom\, Love Texas Art Gallery and both the Oak Cliff Cultural Center and Latino Cultural Center in Dallas\, TX respectively. He has had solo exhibitions in 2022 at Love Texas Art Gallery\, Fort Worth\, TX\, in 2023 at the Oak Cliff Cultural Center in Dallas\, TX and most recently in early 2024 at Daisha Board Gallery in Dallas\, TX\, where he is currently represented. He has an upcoming solo exhibitions slated for 2024 at Various Small Fires / Dallas\, and the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas\, TX. Antonio’s work is part of the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art and private collections across the U.S. \n  \nSign-up through EventBrite!
