Paul Armstrong
I make oil paintings that extract subjects, fragments and visual cues from mass media and the western canon, altering and recombining them in compositions designed to attract attention but complicate interpretation. I’m interested in the process by which we derive meaning from visual language, and how that process is increasingly altered by technologies advancing faster than our attention spans can keep up with. Despite using the commercial aesthetics of digital advertising, my work is purposefully open-ended, and seeks to highlight the motivations evident in consumer media. Ultimately I want viewers to leave the work with a heightened awareness of how they decode and project meaning onto the images that surround them every day.
Paul Armstrong (b. 1998) is an artist and educator working in Denton, TX. He received his BFA in studio art and art education from the University of North Texas in 2023, where he would go on to earn his MFA in studio art in 2026. Paul currently teaches at UNT and NCTC as an adjunct professor
