Earlier this year, artist Laura J. Lawson met a glacier for the first time. During The Arctic Circle and Artica Svalbard artist residencies, Lawson met Blomstrandbreen, a glacier which has retreated 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) in the past 100 years. Her first instinct upon meeting this glacier was to offer gratitude and apology.
The glass sculptures in this exhibition were cast from 3D scans of small pieces of ice that fell from the glacier, floated around the fjord, and washed back ashore. Today these pieces of ice are melted, and the sculptures preserve them as they were in May 2026.
Once sculpture is made of ice, in the shape of Blomstrandbreen. To show that human actions can still shape a future where we repair our climate from catastrophe, Lawson will collect the water from the melting sculpture and recast it for the duration of the exhibition.
thank you/i’m so sorry is installed in The Boedeker, a building formerly used for the production of ice cream. Lawson’s personal collection of books and resources are available for viewers to learn from, to inspire climate work with joy and optimism.
