LAUREN FLENIKEN

Lauren Fleniken is a studio artist from Denton, Texas, and just recently graduated Texas Christian University in 2023 with a BFA in Painting. She has previously exhibited around DFW, and has received awards for her work. Though often working in oil painting, she seeks to test the boundaries of what painting means by incorporating other materials such as fabric and bejeweling.

Fleniken’s work revolves around themes of sexuality and identity. Working with hyper feminine color palettes and imagery, she questions what it means to be feminine and sexual after facing trauma. Working with the figurative, she places herself and those around her in a theatrical and surreal space. Unknown spaces and unsettling imagery juxtaposes with a lacy, glittery exterior to suggest that something is off. A loss of identity after facing gender-based violence is represented through Fleniken’s pieces. The relationships between flesh, fabric, and confrontation with the viewer invites those to look, but not touch.
