ARTIST STATEMENT
Reflecting on various facets of the soul such as religious experience, philosophy, and mortality through large-scale paintings on canvas with acrylic and charcoal, my work often portrays scenes of divine intervention through compositions I've termed “Baroque Expressionism”. This fusion of dramatic, baroque composition paired with abstract expressionism allows me to convey intense emotion and movement between figurative subjects inspired by ecclesiastical themes influenced by my experience of growing up in the Catholic Church.
The work engages in analyzing perpetuated cycles of abuse, the resulting harm, and the sense of purpose found through belief in the divine which accompanies religion. Within recent works, a fundamental question is posed to the viewer, where do these experiences overlap with the viewer and how do these experiences underpin personal beliefs and reflect on the many facets of religious experiences. Ultimately, the work asks viewers to question the complexities of their own beliefs through reflection on the artwork.
