ALVARO ARROLIGA

Alvaro Arroliga is a queer, brown self-taught Nicaraguan photographer and a conceptual artist since 2016. Drawing inspiration from his immigrant journey, he passionately showcases the vibrant fashion born from immigrant and Latine subcultures residing in the U.S.

Arroliga aims to empower LGBTQIA+, people of color, immigrants, and the working class through a queer lens. Based in Dallas, TX, he has challenged Eurocentric beauty norms since 2020 through his ongoing project 'Decolonizing Fashion'. Through this project, Alvaro acknowledges the lingering impact of colonization on indigenous peoples' perception of beauty and style. Motivated by this awareness, he strives to increase visibility and promote positive attitudes towards underrepresented communities. His photography serves as a vehicle for decolonization, incorporating cultural artifacts and everyday elements like Hispanic produce, construction materials and Catholic iconography to spotlight his identity and the Latine community. ‘Decolonizing Fashion’ captures the resilience and vibrancy of everyday life, intentionally stylizing ordinary moments to celebrate beauty. Each image serves as a subversive call for inclusivity and democratization within fashion, expanding the concept of beauty among people of color. Alvaro's work isn't just visual—it’s a cultural dialogue, urging society to embrace and honor the rich diversity that has always existed at its core.
